Lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer death in the United States, claiming an estimated 125,000 lives each year. Yet it is also one of the most survivable cancers when detected early. That’s why Elbert Memorial Hospital is proud to offer Low-Dose CT (LDCT) Lung Cancer Screening. It is a fast, painless, and highly-effective screening tool now available locally for eligible patients in our community.
“Bringing Low-Dose CT lung cancer screening to our community means our neighbors, our friends, and our families can get the care they need close to home — with the same quality and compassion they’ve always counted on from Elbert Memorial,” said Tyler Taylor, CEO of Elbert Memorial Hospital.
What Is Low-Dose CT Lung Cancer Screening?
LDCT is a specialized, non-invasive CT scan of the chest that uses a very low dose of radiation – significantly less than a standard chest CT – to create detailed images of the lungs. Unlike a regular chest X-ray, LDCT can detect small nodules and early-stage abnormalities that may not yet be causing any symptoms. No dye or contrast material is required, and the scan itself takes only a few minutes.
The difference matters enormously. When lung cancer is caught at a localized (early) stage, the five-year survival rate climbs to nearly 65%. But nationally, only about 28% of lung cancers are diagnosed at an early stage. Not to mention the 43% that are not caught until they’ve reached a late stage, when the survival rate drops to just 10%. An annual LDCT screening has been shown to reduce the lung cancer death rate by up to 20%.
Who Is Eligible?
Not everyone needs this screening, it’s specifically designed for people at higher risk. You may qualify if you meet ALL of the following criteria:
- Age: 50–77 (Medicare patients) or 50–80 (private insurance patients)
- Smoking history: Current smoker, OR quit within the last 15 years
- Pack-year history: At least 20 pack-years (1 pack per day for 1 year = 1 pack year)
- Asymptomatic: No current signs or symptoms of lung cancer
- Important note: Cigar and non-tobacco smoking do not qualify toward pack-year history.
Who Is NOT Eligible?
LDCT screening is not appropriate for patients who are currently showing active signs or symptoms of lung cancer, including a persistent cough, chest pain, unexplained weight loss, coughing up blood, shortness of breath, or new onset of wheezing. These patients should speak with their physician about diagnostic testing rather than a screening. Screening is also limited to once per 12-month period.
How to Get Screened
LDCT lung cancer screening requires a physician’s order. Talk to your primary care provider or specialist and ask whether you’re a candidate for low-dose CT lung cancer screening at Elbert Memorial Hospital. A screening worksheet will be completed prior to your scan to confirm eligibility. For more information, contact Elbert Memorial Hospital at 706-213-2569.
